The
Ditchingham site is situated in the picturesque valley of the river
Waveney on the Norfolk Suffolk border. The site is split by the river
itself at the site of a roman ford.
The plant was purchased, as a working maltings, from Courage Brewers
in 1965 and consisted of the first U.K built Saladin box plant, dating
from the late 1800s. The power to operate the plant was from a waterwheel
in the adjacent River Waveney. One of the original box turners from
this plant is proudly on display at the Bass Museum in Burton on Trent.
The current plant at Ditchingham, managed by Paul Thurston, was commissioned
in 1981 to service a new supply contract with a major UK brewer.
The plant was initially built as a two vessel plant producing some 18,000
tonnes of malt per annum, and uniquely comprised one steep / germination
vessel and a germination / kiln vessel the green malt being transferred
from vessel to vessel for turning.
The original Saladin plant was closed and a third vessel was added to
the "new plant". This was a stand alone germination vessel
and increased the sites capacity to its present level of 30,000
tonnes per annum.
As with all Crisp Malting Group's plants Ditchingham has its own barley drying, storage
facilities and malt storage and handling.
As part of Crisp Malting Group's committment to their ongoing success several major
plant projects are in progess on all sites. At Ditchingham the kiln
will be refurbished during 2007.
