NEW MALTING BARLEY STORE AT MEMBURY, BERKS

Crisp Malting Group Ltd. will start the construction this month of a grain silo complex on a site at Membury, West Berks. The first phase will be completed in time for the coming spring barley harvest.

At completion later this year CMG will own a 16000mt capacity dedicated malting barley processing and storage facility. Locally sourced high quality malting barley will be processed and stored at the site for later movement to the company’s maltings in East Anglia utilising CMG’s fleet of bulk vehicles.

The site is adjacent to the grain storage facility of Ridgeway Grain. CMG are pleased to award RG a long term contract to manage the Membury facility.

“Crisp Malting Group Ltd. has always sourced a proportion of their malting barley requirements from southern England for both risk management purposes and to maximise usage of our own vehicles that deliver malt to breweries in the area. In recent years we have relied on collecting malting barley direct from farm or from third party grain stores; however supplies of quality malting barley are becoming tighter due to competition from other crops as well as increased worldwide demand for both malting barley and malt.  We have therefore decided to make a significant investment in our supply chain by constructing the store which will give local growers the option of having their malting barley moved from farm at harvest, thereby lessening the risks involved with long term on farm storage. CMG will, thus be able to secure our requirements in terms of varieties and specification at harvest rather than rely on the open market. CMG will initiate a Malting Barley Partnership similar to the successful ABC Norfolk Malting Barley Partnership, where growers will be offered long term contracts to supply malting barley to the store, it is expected that the group will consist of local growers who have supplied CMG in previous seasons and members of Ridgeway Grain.”
